Mindful of place and people , I try to produce
art work that is subtle, poetic and beautiful.
For me, a sense of place is all about relationships, to the earth, the water, the air and to the people of a locality.

Hi Anne, well you certainly have achieved that, its a truely beautifull piece of work, and a very fitting description of the island, the people too, i
had never heard the term "Bard" till i lived here, so many poets, and its not difficult to see how they have drawn there inspiration by the rolling hills that seem to stretch from shore to shore, the subtle colours amidst dramatic landscape. Your image is all that in the human form, fantastic..

I think that the eyes depicted here are telling a story in themselves. I like the way you connected the figure to nature and her surroundings.

In Hawaii, a flower worn over the right ear signifies availability, on the left, commitment. Your beautiful image is laden with multiple layers of meaning - reminiscent of the island beauties of Gaugin, the fierce spirit of Frida Kahlo, and something else unnameable that is extraordinarly provocative and yet, unfamiliar to me.

Frida Kahlo is a name that came to mind too when I looked at your piece. I loved this image when I saw it at the “art is the map” exhibition. It took my breath away, the way the image is appearing out of the page through a multitude of brush strokes, the layering of people and place. How you have changed the denotation of the islander. I think this piece needs to be seen more.

Hi Anne,
I love the way you made this portrait look old and weathered. Beautiful work!

Hello Anne, The historical sense of your photograph combined with other more contemporary elements makes for an interesting visual statement with inspiration for one part coming from the past and others in the present. The pose and composition of the portrait is very formal and reminds me of a particular period when photography was relatively new, while other elements of your piece make the work feel contemporary and provides an effective visual bridge between the past and present.

Anne,

This is such a romantic piece and I love it. I feel as though it should be featured in an old film or that it was taken from another time and era. It's vintage, historical and narrative, in a way. I feel like this image has a story, like I want to know more about the woman featured. I think you the screened color over the photograph was a brilliant idea. It adds an inkling of modernity to its age.

This is beautiful. I love the contrast of beautiful flower to beauty in the stare. This feels precious.

Anne, Thanks for your generous comments on my pieces. Much of my inspiration comes from rather ordinary things - land patterns when viewed from above - posters - architecture of all sorts - unexpected patterns both man made and natural. I never really know where and when something will catch my eye - but when it does, I try to remember it long enough to make a sketch of it and then redraw it a number of times until it feels right - then I normally put it way for a while so that I'll have a fuzzy memory of where and how I first saw it. It seems to work better for me the further away I get from the actual moment that I found it interesting. Some of the forms and patterns that appear in my work as so old that I have forgetten where there came from which is not such a bad things for me. I just keep collecting and making more drawings and these sometimes and sometime do not turn into other works. That the way it goes. For me the appropriation of stuff is a lot like collection little life experiences. That's about it for now. Thanks for taking the time to send such a thoughtful response. Cheers, Michael

This piece has a haunting quality. The delicacy of the tones, the way it looks almost like an etching, the very direct gaze of the young woman's eyes - very beautiful.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your thoughtful comments on "Sanctuary". I absolutely love your observation that it's important to be both an individual and part of the community. Although there is a part of me that the world sees (outside the window), there is also my own private world (inside the window) that is just as important. However, both aspects create one powerful reality for me.

I know what you mean. I still miss the security and orientation of the mountains of upstate New York, where I grew up. As you could probably guess from my piece on Philadelphia, I didn't enjoy my 'new home' here, and actually resisted getting used to it. See, I'm not staying, and I came here figuring to try to stand on my head for 6 years or so, then leave and say "Good riddance." Made myself miserable for two years that way... I've accepted Philly to certain extent, and take advantage of what's here while I've got the chance. Going back to Boston will feel like finally being able to exhale, though... If this is your interpretation of place, I think you must see it as hard but still lovely, aged but ever full of life, perhaps spartan but not without its charms.

Thank you for your comments on my blog. I had never thought about possible connections to the Wizard of Oz before. Your reflection really made me think and do a little research for a future work!

You definitely achieved the subtle and poetic quality that you were attempting in this piece. The image is simple yet quite thought-provoking. It is just beautiful, I love it!
